Setting Up Deepgram API in Under 5 Minutes

Most transcription tools use Deepgram under the hood—then charge you a markup. Get your own key in 5 minutes. Here's how.

Why Deepgram?

Deepgram is one of the fastest, most accurate speech-to-text APIs available. Many transcription tools use it under the hood—then charge you a markup.

With your own API key, you pay Deepgram directly at ~$0.006/minute.

Setup takes 5 minutes. Let's go.

Step 1: Create Account (1 minute)

Go to: deepgram.com

Click "Get Started Free" or "Sign Up"

You can use Google/GitHub auth or create with email.

No credit card required initially.

Step 2: Get Free Credits (30 seconds)

New accounts get $200 in free credits. This covers ~550+ hours of transcription.

After signup, check your dashboard. The credits should appear automatically.

If not, look for a "credits" or "billing" section to activate the free tier.

Step 3: Create an API Key (1 minute)

In your Deepgram dashboard:

1. Go to "API Keys" (usually in left sidebar) 2. Click "Create New Key" 3. Give it a name (e.g., "Meeting Transcription") 4. Choose permissions (default is fine for transcription) 5. Click "Create"

Copy the key immediately. You won't see it again.

Step 4: Store Your Key (30 seconds)

  • Password manager (recommended)
  • Secure notes app
  • Encrypted document

Don't put it in plain text files, emails, or Slack messages.

Step 5: Add to Your Tool (1 minute)

In whatever transcription tool you're using:

1. Find "Settings" or "API Keys" 2. Paste your Deepgram key 3. Save

Test with a short recording to confirm it works.

Pricing Reality Check

  • $0.0043/minute
  • 45 × $0.0043 = $0.19
  • 20 × 45 × $0.0043 = $3.87/month

Compare to $15-30/month subscriptions. The math is clear.

Free Credits Strategy

  • $200 ÷ $0.0043 = 46,500 minutes
  • That's 775+ hours of transcription
  • Or 15+ hours per week for a year

Most people never exhaust free credits. If you do, rates are still cheap.

Troubleshooting

  • Check for spaces when pasting
  • Verify the key has transcription permissions
  • Create a new key if unsure
  • Make sure you're using Nova-2 model
  • Check your audio quality (garbage in = garbage out)
  • Review what's being sent to API
  • Some tools transcribe more than expected (multiple passes, etc.)

That's It

Total time: under 5 minutes. Total cost: $0 (with free credits) Ongoing cost: pennies per meeting

You've just removed the middle-man pricing layer from your transcription stack.

Every tool that supports "bring your own key" now works at direct API rates.

The hardest part was finding the signup page.
